Dollar Store Christmas: Footwarmer

Frugal Gift 2: Footwarmer

The husband of this gift recipient is being deployed to Iraq for a year with the army. She's a pretty skinny person and always cold, so when I saw the tutorial for how to make a "hot one" as the author called it, I knew it would be perfect.

For the life of me, I cannot find the tutorial I followed, though I really thought I had seen it linked to on Craft Gossip (I've scoured that site, though, and still can't find it...if anyone recognizes it and has a link, please mention in the comments). Basically, you make a pillow with pockets and you fill them about 25% full of rice. You can optionally scent the rice with essential oils by tossing it in a big ziplock with a few drops of oil before filling the pockets. There is a similar project up on Dollar Store Crafts right now that is a combo draft dodger and neck warmer that is filled with dried beans instead.

Cost for Footwarmer: $3.50
* fabric: $1 (two different 1/3 yard cuts is enough for 2 warmers)
* Big Bag of long grain rice: $2.50
* Cinnamon sticks & Almond extract to scent rice: on hand

This post is a part of my Dollar Store Christmas round up 2010 series. Full post here.
